THE SCHOOL

Kornita Senior High School (KSHS) is an established public school since 1987 and located in the Dramaga campus of Bogor Agricultural University. Since its establishment by the rector at the time, the school is fostered and supervised by IPB (Bogor Agricultural University) and become one of the favorite schools in Bogor District. Due to its location, the academic atmosphere is very conducive for students to explore and exploit  their talents or potency.

Nowadays, 27 teachers and 10 administrative staffs serve the students at KSHS. The number of students of KSHS is about 300. Most of them are from the surrounding area. Some of them are from other part of Indonesia, such as Lampung,  Aceh, Medan, Ambon, Ujung Pandang, Papua, Jakarta, Depok. They study at KSHS due to their parents or brothers or sisters studying at IPB. They live in campus area in the house of IPB’s lecturers and others live by renting a room with IPB’s students.

With “A” accreditation, the school provides the best education for their students. Last year, about 30 students qualified for entering and accepted in prestigious universities in Indonesia, such as the Bogor Agricultural University, Pajajaran University in Bandung, Brawijaya University in Malang, Dipenogoro University in Semarang, Jakarta State University, Malang State University, Bandung State Polytechnics, Jakarta State Polytehnics and Soedirman University in Purwekerto. Two of them enrolled to be students as Tsukuba Universty, Japan. Hopefully, they are accepted in the university. Several years ago, there was a student accepted in one of the best university, Bandung Technology University. Some students showed good results in their first year in the universities, including the those who got cum laude named Priskasari Paramuditha (2010), Alifah Ghasani (2011) and Cindy Listiani (2012) enrolled as IPB’s students.

Holistic education system developed in KSHS, meaning that our focus is not only on the academic achievement of the students, but also on their emotional and spiritual performances. KSHS uses the national curriculum with some additional (extracurricular) activities, such as basketball, badminton, futsal, traditional dance and music, English Conversation Club, Nihongo, Cinematography, etc. In addition, the students also get extra hours for studying and practicing their own religion.

KSHS  is a high school and it is not a vocational school. The school prepares the students to continue their study to university. The teachers prepare them since the first grade and in the last grade (grade 12) the preparation is carried out more intensively.

Study hours at KSHS are between 07:00  to 14:00, followed by extracurricular activities until 16.00 pm, in the afternoon. On Saturday, the students have a half-day in school from 07.00 – 12.00. Every Monday morning, to educate students to be concerned about their country (to build nationalism), the students conduct a flag ceremony organized by themselves.

Sister School

On 2009, KSHS have established relationships with UTSS (University of Tsukuba High School at Sakado) as sister schools. Since then, the student and teacher exchange programs were organized annually to improve the quality of education in both schools, especially in the environmental education. Delegations from KSHS (students and their teachers) each year attended the annual symposium at UTSS and Tsukuba University. The symposium of Agricultural Education for Sustainable Development, was organized by the Tsukuba University. Usually, high school students from other Asian countries, such as Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Most of them are laboratory schools in a university like KSHS. The symposium at Tsukuba University are usually conducted simultaneously with a symposium participated by graduate and post graduate students.

A program called Asian Neighborhood Program” was also carried out by students by KSHS and UTSS. This program was supported financially by the Toyota Foundation. Many students were involved in this program not only to know each other, but also to improve students in understanding other cultures and to develop methods and manners of solving environmental problems in their own communities. At the end of this program, they produce a pictorial book on environmental education in three languages (Japanese, Indonesian, English) distributed to elementary, junior and senior high schools. The title of the book is “KIRA-KIRA” meaning "bright".

Other Collaborative Programs

After this program (also called as TF program) ended, in 2012 we have another program called KIKIGAKI with the funding from Toyota Motocorp awarded to an NGO from Japan. This program is endorsed by the Education Ministry, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery Ministry of Japan. In Japan, this program has been carried for 10 years and every year about 100 students were involved in this program.

In Japanese, KIKIGAKI means “listen and record”. Students were sent to villages and interview the “meijin” (an old man/women with their wisdom) and recorded it. When they got back home or to school, they wrote results of the interview and presented it to other people. This March 2013, six students and two teachers of KSHS will visit UTSS and Tokyo to present results of their KIKIGAKI works in with students from around Japan.

We are also participated in a program conducted by AIESEC IPB Expansion. In this program, KHSH students got lesson from undergraduates of international students. AIESEC is the world’s largest youth-run organization. Focused on providing a platform for youth leadership development, AIESEC offers young people the opportunity to be global citizen, problem solver as local citizen, to get experience and skill that matter today,to change the world, through having integrated AIESEC Experiences, Exchange and Leadership opportunities in 110 countries of AIESEC network. Since 1948 AIESEC has been an international independent nonpolitical youth association that aims to promote social understanding, entrepreneurials leadership of youth in the broader community.

February and September 2013, KSHS was involved in TWINCLE Program performed by Faculty of Education CHIBA University, Japan. In this program, eight students from the university supervised by a Professor Assistant, gave a lesson to students of KSHS. The lessons were about Japanese culture and agricultural science (plant factory). We also discussed about education in general with them. Two teachers were invited to visit Chiba University and Super Science High School.

Start from this year (2013), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA) IPB signed an agreement with USAID to develop a method of teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). KSHS as the laboratory school of IPB is involved in this program. KSHS is invited to visit some schools in New York, USA, at the end of this month. The school will host the trainings for science teachers from other schools around KSHS.

In the beginning of November 2013, four science teachers, VP of Curriculum, the Principle and the school commetee attended a workshop held by FMIPA IPB as part of the STEM Project. Five days workshop gave us a new experiences on STEM teaching. We got an enlightment and new skills on teaching STEM from IPB (FMIPA) and Columbia University (Teachers College) experts.

Late November 2013, 2 Graduate Students from Tsukuba University and 2 PostGraduate Students from Tokyo City University visited us. They were introducing a new method in teaching to make student involvement in learning process and developing thinking skill greater.
